As schools are settling back into the fall semester, students and faculty are getting to know each other and working hard at teaching and learning valuable management education skills and concepts. Whether a school is small or large, the quality and number of faculty has an impact on the overall student experience. In the following charts, we take a look at the numbers of faculty at AACSB-accredited schools based on information from the 2012-2013 Business School Questionnaire (BSQ).
How Many Full-Time Faculty do AACSB-Accredited Schools Have?
Faculty size is a common stand-in for school size, so it is interesting to take a look at how many AACSB-accredited schools fit within a few basic faculty size categories. For the purpose of this chart, we have divided the group of participating accredited schools into small (one to 35), medium (36 to 71), large (72 to 107), and very large (108 or more). This allows us to get a general sense of the faculty sizes common at AACSB-accredited schools.
Approximately 26.7 percent of AACSB-accredited schools that participated in the 2012-2013 BSQ fell into the "small" category above with 35 or fewer full-time faculty members. The largest share of AACSB-accredited schools reporting, 35.7 percent, fell within the "medium" range. The final two categories included the remaining 37.5 percent with 20.1 percent reporting between 72 and 107 full-time faculty members and 17.4 percent in the "very large" category of schools with a minimum of 108 full-time faculty. This is a very good mix of schools showing that AACSB Accreditation has been achieved by schools of all sizes.
What about Doctoral Faculty? What Percent of Faculty Reported have Doctorate Degrees?
In the following chart, the numbers listed are the count of schools that reported a specific percentage range of doctoral faculty while the percentage axis displays that as a percent of schools in that category. For example, for small schools, 81 schools reported that between 70 percent to 90 percent of their full-time faculty hold doctorate degrees. This means that approximately 54.4 percent of small schools fall within the range of 70-90 percent full-time faculty with doctorate degrees.
This chart displays the count and percentage of schools for each size category based on the percentage of faculty with doctorate degrees. It is easy to see that the majority of AACSB-accredited schools report a minimum of 70 percent of their full-time faculty hold a doctorate degree, ranging from 88.6 percent in the small school category to 95.8 percent in the large school category. In all except the very large category, over 30 percent of AACSB-accredited schools reported having over 90 percent full-time faculty with doctorate degrees. It is easy to see from this chart that AACSB-accredited schools have a strong focus on academics and on providing a very qualified learning environment for their students.
